Amyloids protect the silkmoth oocyte and embryo.
Iconomidou VA, Vriend G, Hamodrakas SJ.
FEBS Lett. (2000) 479: 141-145.
The most under-rated article I have ever been involved in. Thanks to the brilliant experimental work of my co-authors (Stavros and Bessie), hard evidence was provided that the shell around the silkmoth oocyte (similar to that tasteless layer of irregularly shaped half-hard white stuff between the hard shell and the nice part of your boiled egg on sunday morning) is amyloidal. On top of that, we managed to show that this is a 'normal' amyloid with the same characteristics as those that cause havoc in the brain of people who believed their goverments and ate too much beef.
